Part Four: Joy Killer
If there was a better job in Forks then working at the Stardust café, Jocelyn wasn't aware of it. She helped prepare the cookie, cakes, pies and made the coffee. But it was all ready to serve food so she had the entire store to herself most days. And the owners let her wear her Gothic Lolita outfits to work. Today was a surprisingly rainy day even by Forks' standards. No one had been in even to get out of the rain.
Jocelyn suspected that if she wasn't able to put her own CDs into the speaker's she'd be bored. She had spent most of the day cleaning, dusting, finishing homework and writing a letter home. She only had an hour before closing and she had time to start closing up. Also she was free and clear to
dance with out worrying about someone laughing at her. It was easy to lose her self to the music when it was in a different language. No need to listen to the words as she moved her body to the rhythm as she folded the table clothes.
“Busy today, Jo?” Jocelyn tripped on her feet and went crashing to the ground falling on her back ungracefully.
“Hey, Cade.” Jocelyn grinned getting up slowly fixing her black Gothic maid dress. “I thought rainy days were reserved for Dead-Boy.”
“Wish you wouldn't call him that.” Cade sighed and Jocelyn heard someone try to stifle a laugh. Jocelyn looked up slowly to see a boy standing a foot taller then her self with black hair that hung down to his shoulders slightly and brown eyes that stared right through her. Jocelyn felt for the first time in her entire life like she looked like an idiot. “Oh shush, Jacob.”
“What? It's funny.” Jacob smiled at Jocelyn and she felt her cheeks heat up like she was in second grade again.
“Wish you two would stop this stupid feud.” Cayden rolled her eyes looking back at Jocelyn. “Jo, this is Jacob Black. Jacob this is Jocelyn Whitmore.”
“Oh this is the boy you were talking about.” Jocelyn said brushing her dyed blond hair out of her face forcing herself to sound casual. “Pleasure to met you.”
“Same here.” Jacob looked right in her eyes and tilted his head like Gran's dog used to do when he was confused. Jacob blush suddenly and looked away from her at Cayden. “Why are you telling random girls about me?”
“I'm not a random girl.” Jocelyn said raising herself to her full height glaring. “I'm her best friend.”
“No need to get angry, Joy killer.” Jacob said looking at her sideways.
“Jacob,” Cayden rubbed her temples suddenly as if a headache was coming.
“Joy Killer?” Jocelyn repeated raising an eyebrow. “Don't you mean 'kill joy'?”
“...That's what I said.” Jacob said looking at her a blushing slightly.
“Nooo, you said Joy Killer.” Jocelyn said smirking crossing her arms over her chest. “Not the most sane nickname I've been given but I think it could work.”
“I didn't say-” Jacob started but Cayden grabbed on to his arm.
“You did.” Cayden said looking at him and suddenly widening her eyes. “Oh, please tell me you didn't!”
“Didn't?” Jocelyn asked slowly.
“I know you said it was quick but I didn't think it was
that quick.”
“Shut up, Cade.” Jacob said taking his arm out of her grip. “I think your internal sensor is on the blink.”
“Remember me? Girl with confused look?” Jocelyn said waving at Cade and Jacob. “What's going on?”
“Nothing.” Jacob growled his body seemed to pulse slightly as he stood there clenching his fists. “I have to get going.”
“Wait, Jacob-” Cayden started but stopped as he glared at her.
“Just drop it.” Jacob said pushing the door open angrily and heading out into the rain and Jocelyn jumped as the door slammed shut. She looked over at Cade who stood there looking like she was going to light something on fire with her mind.
“Honestly!” Cayden said crossing her arms over her chest. Jocelyn looked down at her outfit and pulled off her elbow length black gloves and dropped them on the table. “Jo, are you okay?”
“I sure can cause weird reactions in boys, huh?” Jocelyn said forcing a smile. “But two minuets is a new record, right?”
“Don't pay any attention to him, honey.”Cayden said rolling her eyes. “He's got issues.”
“Probably a furry little problem.” Jocelyn was half way through a laugh when she saw the shocked look on Cayden's face. “...Seriously?”
“How do you do that?” Cayden demanded stomping her foot. “Honestly there is no way to surprise you anymore!”
“He's a werewolf?” Jocelyn sudden felt like the sun was shinning even as thunder crashed across the sky. “Oh this is so amazing!”
“Damn it, Jo.” Cade laughed softly. “Nothing bothers you, does it?”
“Meh.” Jocelyn shrugged her shoulders. “So what was he freaking out about?”
“...Better if he tells you.” Cayden said slowly as if trying to keep from revealing something important. “He is going to flip when he finds out.”
“Fine keep your secrets.” Jocelyn stuck out her tongue. She grabbed the table clothes off the floor and set them on the dresser. “So did you have other schemes besides introducing hot boys to me?”
“Wanted to see if you needed a ride home, actually.” Cade said smiling as Jocelyn picked up the menus and staking them on the counter. “Vicky has been known to hate you when it rains.”
“Why does everyone act like my car is the Antichrist?” Jocelyn asked raising an eyebrow at Cade.
“Because she is.” Cade said rolling her eyes. “So ride?”
“Well-” Jocelyn stopped as a familiar ring-tone started to play on Cade's phone. “Deadboy calls.”
“Alice.” Cade clarified as she picked up her phone. “Hey, what's up?”
“Tell her I say hi.” Jocelyn called as she picked up the dishes off the counter and headed to the back room. She quickly washed the dishes as her thoughts drifted back to the stunned look on his face when she'd looked at him. Maybe he'd expected her to look different. She knew Blond was not really her color but it was hard to get rid of something like that. Adel had told if she ever dyed her hair blond he'd have to kill her out of honor of their completion.
But he's not coming back. her mind scolded her and Jocelyn had to force herself not to start crying again. Cayden helped dealing with the absence of her twin but even she couldn't fill the gap. She couldn't have thought-talks with Cayden, although she was sure their might be a spell for it. “I thought you said the gods wouldn't be that cruel, Ads. Stupid fucking liar.”
“Hey Jo?” Jocelyn shook her head and set the dishes on the dryer. She practiced forcing a smile a couple times before heading out front to Cade as she hung up her cell phone and stuck it in her pocket.
“You called, Husband?” Jocelyn grinned.
“Alice invited me to go play baseball with the family.” Cayden smiled happily. “I can still drop you off at home before I go.”
“Pfft, go my darling into the cold embrace of the Cullens.” Jocelyn said bowing slightly. “I give you leave of me.”
“I can give you a ride.” Cade said crossing her arms as Jocelyn walked forward and started pushing her towards the door. “Hey! Stop that!”
"Get thee to a baseball field!" Jocelyn said pushing her out the door. “Off with you.”
“Are you sure you'll be alright?” Cayden asked summoning an umbrella over her head.
“I'm fine. Vicky will be fine.” Jocelyn rolled her eyes. “Now get going before I release the hounds.”
“Alright, alright.” Cade sighed waving. “Text me when you get home so I don't worry, alright?”
“Yeah, yeah.” Jocelyn waved heading back inside. She gave a once over of the place to make sure she'd done everything before she turned off the lights. She lucked the door and headed outside into the rain. She closed her eyes and let the water wash over her taking away some of the pain from her mind. A year since anyone had heard from Adel, mother and Father were having him declared dead soon. Jocelyn looked down at her watch and smiled when it hit midnight with a chirp. “Happy Nineteenth Birthday, Ads.”
“You alright?” Jocelyn jumped and spun around to see Jacob staring at her like she had lost her mind. She felt her cheeks heat up again as she nodded slowly. “You sure?”
“Just enjoying the weather.” Jocelyn muttered walking over to Vicky. She reached into her purse and pulled out her keys. She felt his eyes on her as she sat down in the car and tried to start the car. She heard Vicky whine loudly but refused to start.
“Ah, come on. Baby you know your the only one for me. Please start!” Jocelyn whined slamming her head on the steering wheel. “Don't be a bitch, Vicky. Come on, come on!”
“Hey.” Jocelyn looked over and saw Jacob standing at her window with his hand pressed against it. “I don't think sweet talking your car is going to make it start.”
“Does normally.” Jocelyn countered as Jacob opened her car door.
“Look, why don't I give you a ride home?” Jacob offered his hand to her.
“But what about Vicky?” Jocelyn said clutching onto the steering wheel.
“I can some back and take a look at her after I drop you off,” Jacob said sighing. “Come on, you're going to catch a cold if you sit in wet clothes all night.”
“Maybe I want to catch a cold.” Jocelyn said pulling her keys out and stuffing them in her purse.
“You really are a Joy Killer, you know that?” Jacob said rolling his eyes as he guided her over to a motorcycle parked at the curb. “You want the helmet?”
“I am not riding on that Future Organ Donor vehicle.” Jocelyn said shaking her head vigorously. “Fuck that shit.”
“Don't worry. I'm a very good driver.” Jacob said picking her up by the waist and setting her on the bike like she was a doll. He put the helmet on her head and smiled widly. “now hold on, okay?”
“To what?” Jocelyn whimpered as he sat down in front of her kick starting the bike.
“To me.” Jacob said winking at her reeving the engine.
