I’ve given up on giving up slowly
I’m blending in so you won’t even know me
Apart from this whole world that shares my fate
Alex wasn't an overly naughty child. She just had a knack for getting into mischief. She ways also very good at keeping the mischief she'd done a secret which made up, she thought, for the things she did. As long as no one found out about them what was the harm? Besides, she thought as she watched her babysitter Mrs. Hale sip her tea, she'd never done anything that harmed anyone.
Alex usually tried to suppress the mischief part of her brain so not to make her foster parents sad. She'd seen them get that way some mornings, she never knew what caused them. They had lots of secret meetings at night and she'd heard her name mentioned a lot and it made her feel all dark and twisty inside.
But today she couldn't stop the mischief when she'd made Mrs. Hale's tea. She needed to go to the book store. Alex couldn't explain what drew her eyes to Dog*Star books every time she'd walk round the corner with her Foster parents. Maybe it was Nice Ms. Swirl who always smiled at her and mentioned how her eyes 'remind me of a dear friend I had' or the sweats she got from Ms. Swirl when her foster parents weren't looking.
Her Foster Parents were nice people but they wouldn't let her go in to Ms. Swirl's store. She could never figure out why, Ms. Swirl seemed like a nice enough lady. So she'd made a plan, as soon as Mrs. Hale fell asleep Alex would slip out and walk round the corner.
It wasn't a naughty thing to do, she reasoned, she just wanted a book. None would ever know, she could keep a secret. She was good at keeping secrets.
And this one last bullet you mention
Is my one last shot at redemption
Cause I know to live you must give your life away
Cealyn was small. She'd heard her Aunt and Uncle call her such and when their friends came by they always made remarks about how small she was. Not that Cealyn minded. Smallness was essential to her existence, because the smaller you were, the better you could hide from Aunt and Uncle.
Considered objectively -- and Cealyn did a lot of objective considering -- Aunt was not a bad 'mother'. Both she and Uncle kept Cealyn reasonably well-fed, clean, and neatly dressed. But Cealyn knew she didn't have a normal family. Other families didn't scream in the hallways when something wasn't precisely as they wanted it. Other families had people to tea. Other families didn't curse brother and law's name on a regular basis. Other families went out to Diagon Alley or California Academy Of Magic or to museums and libraries together. She knew they did. She'd read books.
Cealyn spent most of her time reading books. Good books about other places were children didn't have to hide from their families. But she'd read all the books in the house and she needed new books. She even had a hiding place to put them when she got there. She just needed to get them. There was a book store round the corner she was forbidden to go near down the block and round the corner. She knew Aunt and Uncle would never look for her there. She could sit in there and read for hours without having to hide.
The lady who owned the store was a 'Blood Traitor', which Cealyn didn't understand. All she knew was that she was British and sneaked her candies when Aunt and Uncle were storming past it. She'd let her stay in the store and read, Cealyn was certain of it.
She could sneak out the entry the house elves used and slip out the garden. Cealyn was small, she could fit. No one would notice she was missing anyways. She was good at hiding.
And I’ve been housing all this doubt
And insecurity
And I’ve been locked inside that house
All the while you hold the key
Becca didn't have friends. Not that she really needed them. There was Honey and Mommy, they were enough. The kids who came into Mommy's store were boring, she and Honey watched them from the loft were Mommy kept all the magic books. They hide between 'okay to sell' and 'background check' sections and watched.
Mommy tried to get Becca to play with the other kids but Becca could tell they were boring. No one else had magic like her and Mommy. Even the Magic kids who came weren't interesting. She told Mommy they were boring when she'd ask. Honey understood that but Mommy shook her head. Mommy said that it would pass, that it was part of being Veela. But Becca didn't care. She and Honey would play up in the loft and save princesses and battle dragons.
Mommy looked up at the loft after hanging up the phone. Mommy always left at two to go get an owl away from the muggles. She's always wave to Becca and Honey and put the 'Lunch' sign up and go through the fire place. Honey and Becca would be able to go on the trips when she turned nine. Mommy would only be gone a couple minuets and then Honey was in charge of the store.
Most days people wouldn't come by the store when Mommy was gone. And if they did they waited outside the door till Mommy came back. But there were voices coming from the Horror section near the back door. Becca grabbed Honey as she dragged him towards the railing on the loft and looked down trying to see the people who'd come in.
Becca silently hoped that they'd be different from the other kids. Mommy didn't play much and honey was running out of places for them to save people from. But even if they were boring like the rest she could still watch.
And I’ve been dying to get out
And that might be the death of me
And even though there’s no way of knowing where to go
I promise I’m going
Alex stood in front of the glass door and glared at the sign declaring “Out to Lunch”. She tried the handle to the door and pulled on it but it wouldn't budge one bit. She stood there for a moment trying to decide whether or not to go back home. She didn't have much time before her Foster Parents got home and then she'd have to wait to come back.
“No,” Alex turned and saw a girl around her age looking dismayed at the sign on the door. The other girls blond hair was long and she was dressed in funny clothes sat down in the middle of the side walk looking at the door saddly.. Alex's mischief reminded her silently that it wasn't just about her anymore and that sneaking to the back door was okay because the other girl needed a book too.
“Wanna see if the back doors locked?” Alex offered helpfully.
Because I got to get out of here
I’m stuck inside this rut that I fell into by mistake
I got to get out of here
“I...” Cealyn stared at the girl with short brown hair and plainly muggle clothes as she smiled at her. Cealyn fidgeted slightly before nodding slowly as she fallowed the girl around the back of the store.
“I'm Alex by the way.” The girl said leading the way like she'd plotted this before.
“Cealyn.” She said stopping outside the back door as Alex pushed it open. “Are you sure its a good idea to do this?”
“We aren't stealing anything.” Alex reassured her. “We'll just wait inside for Ms. Swirl to get back, okay?”
And I’m begging you
I’m begging you
I’m begging you to be my escape
“Shouldn't she be here?” Becca heard one of the girls ask softly. “It doesn't seem safe to leave it open.”
“Bet she's just in the back eating lunch.” Another girl said much louder then the first and Becca hugged Honey to her chest waiting for them to come closer so she could see them. “Don't worry, Cealyn.”
“You've been here before Alex?” Cealyn asked and it sounded like she was fallowing Alex closer to the children's section right below the loft.
“No, Have you?” Alex asked. Becca silently pleaded for them to keep walking forward so she could see them but they both paused.
“No.” Cealyn seemed thoughtful. “I hope we wont cause any trouble by just letting ourselves in.”
Becca sighed angrily as she push with her toes and she swung her waist on the railing with Honey looking down at the two girls finally seeing them. She hadn't expected them to look different.
I’ve given up on doing this alone now
Cause I’ve failed and I’m ready to be shown how
You’ve told me the way, and now I’m trying to get there
Cealyn jumped back and looked at the dirty looking pink rabbit that fell between her and the other girl. She tilted her slightly and looked at the thing closely poking it slightly with her shoe and heard an almost strangled gasp from above causing her to look up sharply to see another girl in a light yellow dress and pigtails leaning over the railing at them looking horrified.
And this life sentence that I’m serving
I admit, that I’m every bit deserving
But the beauty of grace is that it makes life not fair
“Leave Honey alone.” The girl demanded shyly as Alex watched Cealyn move her foot away from the plush toy.
“You were spying on us!” Alex glared at the girl. She didn't like people watching her like that. It made her feel like she'd done something wrong.
“Was not.” The girl stated calmly.
“Was too!” Alex said looking at Cealyn who looked utterly out of her element.
“Uh...” Cealyn said shyly.
“Was not, so there.” the girl leaned over the railing further sicking out her tongue at Alex. And suddenly seemed to loose her balance.
Because I got to get out of here
Cause I’m afraid that this complacency is something I can’t shake
I got to get out of here
Cealyn gasped loudly as the girl tumbled over the railing ans let out an undignified squeak as she came hurling towards them. Cealyn covered her eyes with her hands flinching waiting for the sound that fallowed when ever her aunt kicked a house elf across the room.
And I’m begging you
I’m begging you
I’m begging you to be my escape
Becca let a smile spread across her face as she turned slowly as she looked up at her dress that stayed perfectly straight. Mommy was always telling her that a lady never let their dresses go up past there knees. Mommy would be so proud, Becca thought happily as she spun in the air as her pigtails hung down towards the floor.
And I am a hostage to my own humanity
Self detained and forced to live in this mess I’ve made
Alex had her eyes squeezed shut waiting for a bad sound to fallow after the girl stopped screaming but it didn't seem to come as she slowly opened her eyes and stared in aw at the girl simply floating in the air upsides down. She just stood there with her mouth hanging open in shock.
And all I’m asking is for you to do what you can with me
But I can’t ask you to give what you already gave
Cealyn slowly removed her hands from her eyes as she heard one of the girls humming happily and saw that instead of the bunny on the ground was a rather large pillow that had rabbit ears. Cealyn felt her cheeks tint as she looked up at the other girls it seemed at the same moment they looked at her.
I fought you for so long
I should have let you win
Oh, how we regret those things we do
“Your floating.” Alex said blushing like she'd done something unthinkable. Becca didn't understand it really. Doing magic was wonderful.
“Uh huh.” Becca nodded happily adding, “And my skirt stayed up.”
“You do that often?” Cealyn asked raising her eyebrows at her. Cealyn seemed to know magic was okay but seemed nervous none the less.
“Nope.” Becca shook her head watching her pigtails whip around her face.
And all I was trying to do
was save my own skin
Oh, but so were you
“Why are you smiling?” Alex demanded. This was not something she'd meant to do. She wasn't sure how she knew she'd done it but she had. How could that girl seem so at ease with floating upside down?
“Cause your both witches like me.” the girl replied swirling around slowly. “My names Becca.”
“Nice to met you.” Cealyn seemed unfazed by what Becca said. Alex just stared at them in shock. They had to be nuts. They just done something unnatural in a book store and no one seemed to notice but her.
“hey, do you want to be friends?” Becca asked cheerfully. Yes, Alex decided. They were indeed insane.
So were you
