here we go with the anticipated chapter. ^^
Chapter Seven
Brayden knew something was wrong when she felt something float through her veins, changing her. She knew that she had been infected by Kyle's lycanthropy but she doubted that she would go insane if he died. She certainly felt no bond of any kind to the werewolf.
Kill him, Remus, she sent to her bond-mate. He's lying.
Are you sure? he asked and she could feel his hesitation.
I'm sure, love. Just kill him and come back to me.
She caught sight of the inn ahead and she slowed the horse down to a trot, not realizing that she could see much farther than she ever had.
---------------
Remus turned his attention back to Vance, baring his fangs at the quivering werewolf. "You are a liar, Kyle Vance, and therefore you shall be punished for infecting another and trying to steal a vampire's mate from him. A punishment of death. May God have mercy on your soul." He then took his sword and decapitated the werewolf.
Well done, Andreas replied. We've finished off the others and we are turning around to head back to the inn.
I'll be there, Remus responded. He kicked the corse viciously before he took off, using his preternatural speed.
----------------
Brayden arrived back at the inn well before the others. She tethered the horse and went inside to find a cloth and some water to clean her wound. Despite Remus' healing saliva, the wound left a scar on her shoulder, reminding her of her lycanthropy.
The innkeeper pressed a damp cloth to her shoulder and cleared most of the blood by the time the others arrived. To her dismay, she found that the markings on her skin were still there, no matter how much she scrubbed.
"Brayden?" Amaryllis' voice sounded throughout the inn. "Where are you?"
"In here," she called from her office, reclining back in her chair.
She winced when she heard the group rushing to her. Damn, lycanthropy spreads quickly.
So does vampirism, Remus said. Mon dieu, mon amour, I am so sorry. If I were only earlier...
Stop blaming yourself for this mess, Remus. It's Kyle's fault and he has been dealt with. Now, all we need to do is deal with the present.
She was caught off when her coworkers ran toward her, grabbing her into a three-way hug.
"Are you okay?" Gen asked, eyeing the cloth.
"Fine. Kyle managed to bite me during our union," Brayden replied.
"Are you infected?" Severus asked, leaning against the doorjam.
She summoned enough courage to nod. "Unfortunately, I am infected with lycanthropy but I am not bound to that bastard. I do not want to hear that it is any of your faults, all of you," she added, glaring at them all. "It is Kyle's fault and a little of mine as well, but do not blame yourselves for this. There was no way for any of you to know that he would come after me."
"Where is Harrison?" Andreas asked.
"Dead," she said, bowing her head. "He had managed to untie me before Kyle found him and..." She looked away, trying not to see the mental images.
He was a good man and an even better werewolf, mon cherie, Remus said, his voice sad. I'm almost there.
Hurry. I need you here.
Brayden frowned as she admitted the one thing she was trying to hide. As much as she liked being alone, the thought of being with someone warmed her heart.
----------------
Remus and Brayden were at Remus' room, in each other's arms, lying on the bed. The others were downstairs, talking and having drinks as a celebration. Remus nuzzled the back of his mate's neck, taking in her sweet scent.
"What happens now?" Brayden asked quietly, staring at the off-white walls.
"What do you mean, mon cherie?" he asked against her neck, feeling her shudder.
"I mean, your job is done. You solved the mystery of Georgetown. Do you guys have to go back to where you came from?"
Remus exhaled a breath, his undead heart heavy. He didn't need to breathe and his heart would never beat again, so these feelings were foreign to him. "Yes. Our job is done and we will be withdrawn from here."
She tightened her grip on his hands and she turned around to face her vampire mate, her light blue eyes staring into his amber ones. She didn't know if she would be able to function without Remus in her life. He could be gone weeks, months, or even years, doing odd jobs. And he would be in danger, more danger than ever.
"Would you let me go with you?" she asked softly, still staring at him.
He was shaking his head. "As much as I would love your company, Brayden, I think it is best if you stay here. You have a stable job and you are not in much trouble or danger. Besides, you need to get used to your lycanthropy."
He hated himself as he saw the disapppointment shine in her eyes. He tugged her closer and kissed her, moaning at her taste. She tasted the same, but she now had a hint of wilderness in her and he found that to be very sexy.
That night, the two shared a love that was the stuff of romance stories.
--------------
part one is finished at last. Next up is Gen's story. After she is done, then it's Amaryllis' turn and finally the last one is Lily. Then I will see what i want to do with this story: either continue it or stop.
