A Reason to Live
written by Mistress Wisewings
Summary: Also is on fictionpress.com, under Christina E Lupin. To Jayden Andover, life was perfect. That is, until the ultra hot new English teacher arrives and trouble brews. Trouble of a supernatural kind. Dallas was sent to investigate the principal, who is a demon and wants to build an army using the children.
Chapter One: The New Teacher
Jayden “Jade” Andover got up that morning just like she always did. She took a shower, dressed up in her normal attire of jeans and a t-shirt, ate breakfast, and got on the bus to her high school. She even sat in her ordinary seat on the bus, next to the same guy, Micah Silverson, who talked her ear off. Her best friend, Hailey Brown, greeted her at the door and the two headed toward sophomore English.
However, when the two entered the classroom, Mrs. Anne Booth didn’t greet them. In fact, a rather gorgeous young man sat in her chair, flicking through the book they were currently reading, To Kill a Mockingbird. When they had opened the door, he looked up and smiled at them.
“Hello, ladies.”
God, Jayden though dreamily, his voice is like cool silk brushing against her skin. She tried to hide her blush and she took her usual seat in the front, Hailey following. The young man, who looked to be in his middle twenties, put down the book and looked at the seating arrangement.
“You must be Jayden and Hailey, am I correct?” he asked, looking up at them with his silvery-blue eyes.
“Uh-huh,” Hailey said airily.
“Nice to meet you both. I’m Dallas Thompson, but call me Dallas. Mr. Thompson is my father and I’m too young to be called that.” He gave a chuckle that seemed to melt both girls into puddles in their seats.
“What happened to Mrs. Booth? Is she okay?” Jade asked, snapping out of her trance.
Dallas stopped smiling and he seemed uncomfortable. After clearing his throat, he glanced down at the desk. “Mrs. Booth, uh, took an extended leave and is currently vacationing down south somewhere. She won’t be back for the rest of the school year.”
How odd, Jade thought. Mrs. Booth loved teaching sophomore English. She said she wouldn’t want to do anything else, even vacationing. So why would she all of a sudden, with no warning, up and leave like that? Did something happen? There had to be a reason for her departure.
Before Jade could begin to interrogate the gorgeous substitute, the rest of the class entered. Like the two girls, they noticed the change in teachers and Jade could see their confusion on their faces as they took their seats. Dallas took roll just as the bell signaling the beginning of first period. Once the bell finished ringing, he was up out of his seat and stood in front of the class, a smile on his face.
“Good morning, class. My name is Dallas and I will be taking over for Mrs. Booth, who won’t be back for the rest of the school year. She decided to take a vacation and she is resting comfortably somewhere down south. Now,” he seemed to change in front of their eyes, becoming more professional instead of the youth he had been, “I’ve gone over the notes and I see that you are currently working on To Kill a Mockingbird. For homework, you were supposed to read two chapters and to have a quiz the next day. So, why don’t we go ahead and do that quick so I can go ahead with what is planned.”
Dallas passed out a small two-page packet that was handwritten, not typed. The handwriting was perfect and seemed a little old-worldly. The class seemed a little confused but they picked up their pencils and began to take the quiz while their young teacher stayed up front and watched them.
--
By the time lunch came around, the entire sophomore class knew of their English teacher’s plight. The first and second period students spread the gossip to their friends, who spread it to their friends, and so on. All the girls were simply drooling over the new teacher while the boys either grumbled over the obvious attention he got from the girls or talked about how cool he was.
“He was so knowledgeable about the book too!” Hailey gushed as she sat next to the gathering of girls. “I mean, I know a lot of people have read this book over the years, but the way he talked about it… the questions he asked us…” She let out a dreamy sigh.
“If I didn’t know any better,” said Delilah, grinning, “I’d say you were in love with the man.”
“He’s not that much older than us!” The brunette defended herself, blushing darkly.
“But he’s still a teacher,” replied freshman Gretchen, looking concerned over the rim of her glasses. “It’s against the rules to date a teacher. Besides, he could be sued for seducing a minor and unprofessionalism.”
Hailey brushed her off and continued to gossip, with Jade and some of the other girls glancing at her oddly. It wasn’t like Hailey to get this interested in a guy before. Something was going on at the school and Jade figured that it centered on this new teacher, Dallas.
--
Dallas reclined back in the chair as the final bell rang to signal the end of the school day. He waved to the students and glanced uneasily at the large stack of papers he had to grade. He should have known that he would have to grade papers but, as usual, he took action first instead of thinking. When he heard of the possible threat to this small Minnesotan town, he gave no thought to what he would get himself into and rushed over, taking the position of an English teacher as the teacher left. It was the truth that Mrs. Booth took a vacation, but no one knew the reason why, except for the principal himself.
He clenched his fist in anger, thinking about the principal of the school. It was him that Dallas was alerted to, the one who would soon be causing all hell to break loose. Literally. The person who told Dallas of the mission had given him a folder about the man or, truthfully, a demon. As Dallas himself was a demon, he knew that he had the power and foolishness to put an end to the demon’s reign. It was the demon’s intention to brainwash the young students he housed in the high school and turn them into his personal army.
In the demon world, a demon was forbidden from turning a minor. If one was caught doing so, he would be sentenced to burn in hell for eternity. It was not a sentence any demon wanted. So, why was this demon so intent on brainwashing children?
“You think too much, Dal.”
Dallas whipped around to see a woman he recognized enter the room. He held in a groan as she crept up to him, swaying her hips in what seemed to be seductive. It was no secret that Vivian wanted him badly and it was also no secret that he didn’t want her. It wasn’t like Vivian was not attractive (she was very attractive) but he found that he was not interested. It was like he was waiting for something, someone.
“Hello Vivian,” he greeted politely. “Why are you here?”
She giggled. “To check on you and to see how you are adjusting.” Vivian pressed herself against him. “How was your day?” Her voice practically radiated her desire for him. Dallas wanted to lean away from her but he knew it wouldn’t be proper. He was raised that he was to never raise a hand to a woman nor was he to ignore one either, but this case was slightly different.
“It was fine. It went by with no trouble.”
“Well, did you at least scan the principal to see if Samuel got his information correct?”
“Of course I did,” Dallas nearly snapped. God, Vivian got on his nerves. “Samuel is correct in his theory but I have yet to see any suspicious activity.”
“It’s only the first day you’ve been here,” she purred. “School’s been in session for a little over a week. Don’t fret, my love. You’ll get your signs soon and you’ll get to bring him in so justice can be served.” Her hands moved all over his body, going lower and lower until he stopped her.
“Don’t you think you should get back? I think your shift starts in a half hour,” he said, his velvety voice low with anger.
Vivian put on a fake smile on her face. “Of course. Best of luck, Dallas.” She removed her manicured hands and sashayed out of his classroom, her heels clicking on the tiled floor. Dallas knew that by now her eyes were slowly turning red as her inner demon roared in fury.
As demons age, they begin to start looking for potential mates. Said mates can be ether male or female. The only way a demon can identify a mate is by the smell of the being in question. If the being smelled wonderful and brought desire out to play, then the being was the demon’s potential mate. To Dallas, Vivian didn’t smell any different than normal: of flames and sulfur. Her job was to admit convicted demons into hell and she was near the hot flames. It was a job no demon wanted and it was reserved to a demon that could stand to hear the screams, to feel the heat, and not become squeamish.
With a heavy sigh, Dallas stuffed the papers into his large messenger bag and he began to clean up so he could leave. He had a lot of work to do.
