The Forbidden

Summary: It is strictly forbidden in the supernatural community to have a child with another specie. So when Janet Marigold became pregnant with her vampire lover's child, she gave the child away after birth so her were-eagle clan could never know. She never even told Darien Montague of his child.
Years later, Kelsey Paulson has come into her inheritance as a vampire and a were-eagle. As she learns to use her new powers, a terrible evil falls over the town of Reynold. A tag-team of supernaturals are sent in to extinguish the evil and none of them expected to sense someone like Kelsey.
Matthew White is the leader of his team from the Federation, a powerful weretiger. When he caught sight of Kelsey, he knew he had to have her. It didn't help that his tiger nature wanted her as well.
----------Prologue---------------
Janet Marigold wrapped her precious bundle closer to her chest as she ducked behind a wall to avoid being caught. Her heart raced at the thought of being captured and she didn't even want to think what they would do to her child, her little girl.
Oh, how Janet wished she could tell everyone that she had given birth to a beautiful daughter, but she couldn't. Everyone knew that she was seeing Darien Montague, a leader in the Federation. The Federation was the supernatural police force, complete with their own private investigators and the works. If the Federation ever found out what her daughter, Kelsey, was, Janet knew she would die and Kelsey would also. Darien would lose his job and be forever shunned.
One of the laws among the supernaturals was to never crossbreed with another specie of supernatural. Sure, supernaturals could breed among their own kind and with humans, but never anything else. Those caught with crossbreeds were eliminated and so was the child.
Janet peered around the corner and breathed a sigh of relief as the guards left. She sprinted along the alley, her sharp vision catching everything in her way. The were-eagle moved with a speed that made her almost impossible to be seen, except by vampires and werefolk. She didn't stop until she caught sight of her sister's little cottage on the outskirts of Reynold. She glided over to the door and knocked, her breathing still even.
The door cracked open to reveal her brother-in-law Kevin Paulson. "Janet? What are you doing here?"
"Not now, Kevin. Is my sister home?" Janet replied.
"Yes, but..."
"Let me in and I'll tell you what's going on."
Kevin heaved a sigh and slid the door open, revealing that he was half naked, with his pants slung low on his hips. As a fellow were, he felt no need to have all his clothes on. The werefolk were called the sluts of the supernatural community, because of their sensuality and their apparent lack of appropiate clothing.
Janet hurried in and perched herself on the couch as Kevin locked the door. Her bundle made a soft noise and Janet stiffened just as Kevin did. The gorgeous were-eagle turned around slowly and stared at the clothed bundle in his sister-in-law's arms. "Is that.... a baby?"
"A baby?" came a sleepy voice from behind them.
Holly Paulson entered, stretching her arms to the ceiling. Her ash brown hair was tossled from sleep and her eyes were at half mast.
Janet sighed and pushed aside some of the cloth to reveal the child underneath. Both Holly and Kevin peered down and their expressions lightened to joy and awe.
"She's so adorable," Holly murmured, reaching down to stroke a soft cheek. "Whose is it?"
"Mine," Janet said.
Holly gasped and Kevin jerked. He stared at her. "You do know what this means, don't you? The entire community knows that you would never sleep with anyone other than Darien."
"I know, Kevin. That's why I came to you guys. I need to sent my daughter to someone I know I can trust to keep her a secret. If the Federation found out...." She couldn't get the words to come unstuck from her throat. "Please, I need your help."
"What do you want us to do, Janet?" Holly asked.
Janet's eagle-gold eyes looked up to her older sister. "Take care of her for me, raise her as your own."
Kevin laughed. "You have got to be joking, Janet. We can't raise a child, especially a crossbreed."
Holly whirled on her husband. "I would do the same thing if I were in Janet's shoes. Whether you like it or not, mister, I will take my niece and raise her as if she were my daughter. If you don't like it, then leave and never come back."
The male were-eagle stood in silent shock, watching his wife gently take the precious bundle from her sister's arms. Holly rocked her arms and cooed to the little one, like a mother would do to soothe a crying child. Kevin always longed to have children but he couldn't. The were doctor told him that he could not produce children and that devastated both him and his wife. Now they were given the chance to raise a child, maybe not their own but a child nonetheless. Besides, when he had taken one look at the baby, he fell in love with her.
"We'll do it," Kevin decided. He walked over to Holly, wrapped his arms around her, and stared down at the sleeping child. "It's hard to believe, that this child will grow up to be part eagle and part vampire."
Holly nodded. "Yes, but she will be loved and we will help her along the way." She turned to talk to her sister but found that Janet had already left. "We never asked for her name."
"I think Janet was in too much of a hurry to find a place for her daughter to live that she didn't think of a name."
As the couple watched the sleeping baby, Holly thought of a perfect name. "We shall name her Kelsey," she mumbled, smiling when the baby's eyes opened to reveal the most beautiful golden eyes.
