This is a fanfiction I'm writing in concert with Allie starring our original characters beside the main cast of Smallville. None of this is concrete yet, but it is an introduction to my character, Quinn, a 'meteor freak' who has never been to Smallville. I'm imagining this event occurring around the middle of Season 5, after Lana and Clark start dating.

Quinn stepped off the bus and ran a thin-fingered hand through his disheveled blond hair. He wore a pair of black track pants and an ultra light t-shirt. A black-orange backpack was slung over his shoulder, and a Star Wars duffel bag hung across his chest. He adjusted his frameless glasses, pushing them up the bridge of his nose with his middle finger.
“Well, we’re definitely in Kansas now, Ty.” Quinn crouched down next to the golden retriever puppy sniffing his sneakers and scratched him behind the ears. The dog looked up at him and cocked his head to one side, as though he didn’t quite understand. Quinn grinned. “Come on, buddy.” He slid his hand beneath the puppy’s stomach and lifted him onto his shoulder. Ty licked Quinn’s ear fervently, pausing only to examine a large crow lurking on the outskirts of the bus depot. “Considering this town’s called Smallville, I should find what I’m looking for pretty quickly.”
Quinn grabbed a taxi into town and got out on the tiny main street. A converted movie theater, now a coffee shop, called the Talon, seemed to be the local highlight, so Quinn stepped through the gilded front doors, holding them open for a raven-haired young woman. She thanked him, smiling, and he returned the gesturing, nodding politely.
The Talon’s interior was decorated with a variety of exaggerated Egyptian symbols. Several circular tables and comfortable-looking couches adorned the room, and a staircase next to the curved counter led to a room upstairs. Some of the customers looked up at the newcomer, but quickly returned to the lattés and conversations. Quinn approached the counter; patiently waiting while the middle aged, red-haired woman refilled someone’s cup.
“I’ll be with you in just a moment.” The woman smiled kindly as she walked past, setting the beverage in front of its owner. She returned quickly. “What can I get you? The double mint cappuccino’s a good way to get your bearings on your first day in town.”
“Am I that obvious?” Quinn chuckled.
“Well, the full load sort of gave you away.” She gestured to Quinn’s bag, where Ty was poking his head out and looking around inquisitively. Quinn nodded, still smiling.
“I’m actually looking for a place to stay for a couple weeks. I don’t see a motel or anything like that around here…”
“Well, we usually have a room for rent here, but it’s taken right now.” The woman leaned on the counter, crossing her arms in front of her. She had a kind voice, the voice of a long time mother. “You look like a student. Kind of a long commute to Metropolis University, isn’t it?”
“Oh, no.” Quinn shook his head, smiling again. He scratched Ty behind the ears, and the puppy woofed softly, his eyes falling half-shut. “I’m not a student anymore. I’m actually looking for a job.”
“A job for two weeks?”
“Well…” Quinn pursed his lips. “Depending on how much I like it here, I might be making my stay more permanent.”
They were interrupted as a young woman with light brown hair bustled up behind Quinn, slipping around the counter and donning an apron as she talked a mile a minute.
“Sorry, boss, I didn’t mean to be late but Chloe and I got caught up in Metropolis and there was this really hot guy at the mall and it looked like he was checking her out, well, not so much checking her out as checking her purse out, anyway he tried to grab the bag and run, and I made sure he ran, smacked him so hard he must have been seeing stars-“
“It’s okay, Lois, it’s kind of a slow day. Take your time.” The older woman laughed. Lois rolled her eyes.
“Mrs. Kent, I believe that speed is the key to any good waitresses technique-“ She stopped, eying Quinn up and down. “You new around here?”
“Lois, be nice.” Mrs. Kent gently slapped Lois’s arm, turning back to Quinn. “I’m sorry, Lois can be extremely blunt at times.”
“It’s okay.” Quinn extended his hand. “Quinn Silverman.”
“Lois Lane.” Lois shook. “So, what brings you to Smallville, Silverman? Small town girls? Exotic corn varieties?”
“Just a passing interest.” Quinn turned back to the older woman. “I’m going to be staying here for awhile.” He looked over Mrs. Kent’s shoulder. “Could I have one of those lemon poppyseed muffins? The bus ride left me with a craving.”
“Sure.” Mrs. Kent presented Quinn with one of the lovely pastries, and he handed her a dollar bill.
A girl descended the stairs, waving to the woman behind the counter. “See you later, mom, I’m meeting Clark and Lana at the barn!” She pulled up short when she saw Quinn, and for a moment their eyes locked.
“Oh, Katee, this is Quinn.” Mrs. Kent smiled. “He’s going to be staying in Smallville for awhile.”
“Nice to meet you, Katee.” Quinn grabbed her hand in a quick shake.
“Likewise.” Katee said quietly, her eyes still clamped firmly to his by an invisible tether. She half-smiled at him. They tore their eyes away from each, and Katee quickly hurried away, dropping a folder as she did so. She apparently didn’t notice.
“Katee!” Mrs. Kent started towards the folder, but Quinn was faster, setting down his bags by the counter.
“I’ll get it. Can you watch Ty for a second?” He hurried after Katee, who was already standing next to her car.
“Katee!” Quinn called, pushed the door open. She looked up.
Suddenly a large black SUV across the street made a violent swerve, heading straight for Katee. She turned and saw the bumper bearing down on her. For a normal human the movement would have been instantaneous, but Katee saw the event unfold in agonizing slow motion. She was about to lunge aside when suddenly Quinn was beside her, wrapping his arms around her. There was an electric jolt and she was passing through the car, Quinn still beside her. They landed on the asphalt on the other side as the SUV forced Katee’s car onto the asphalt.
Katee lay on her side, staring into Quinn’s deep brown eyes. People were starting to pile out of the Talon, shouting. Mrs. Kent and Lois ran out, yelling Katee’s name. Katee snapped herself out of her reverie and looked up as they came around the SUV.
“Honey, are you okay?” Mrs. Kent knelt next to her adopted daughter, brushing her hair back from her face.
“Yeah, I’m fine.” Katee looked back to Quinn, but he wasn’t there anymore. Looking up and down the street, she couldn’t find him anywhere.
Back inside the Talon, Quinn scooped up his bags, heading for the back door. Ty woofed quizzically.
“That was probably a bad idea.” Ty snorted. “Shut it, you.”
