A Twilight story by Mistress Wisewings
Summary: New Moon, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn never happened. Bella was killed by James before Edward could rescue her. In his grief, he runs to Italy to kill himself when he runs into an old friend. She helps him heal and they move back to America, where the Cullens are trying to find the nomads. As they search for the vampires, Edward and Alyssa begin to form a new bond they never saw coming.
Notes: I've had this thought in my head for almost a good half year, but never written it down. And now, here I am. The new characters in here are not based on us, just some characters created in my head that want to be voiced. Hope you enjoy.
Chapter One
Edward Cullen was a failure. No one could tell him differently, not even his family. He failed the one woman who believed in him, who trusted him, who loved him for what he was. He had run as fast as he could and he was still too late. When he rushed into that ballet studio in Phoenix, he saw James bending over Bella's broken body, ready to sink his teeth into her. Rage forced him into action, throwing the vampire's body across the room, slamming into a glass mirror. As the younger vampire lay stunned, Edward fell to his knees beside his beloved, stroking her cheek and whispering her name. She never reacted once, not even to take in a breath. For a vampire, breathing was a useless thing, a reflex of their humanity, and he knew that her not breathing was a big deal. The rage subsided and panic took over. He leaned down and pressed his ear against her chest, listening for the sound of her heart, but he couldn't hear anything.
As Edward continued to remember that night, he found that he could not recall what happened after he tried to listen to Bella's heartbeat. All he could remember was the rage and the despair. He shook himself and his eyes opened to reality. He stared out from the shadows of his hideout, watching the humans go about their daily lives, unaware of vampires or any other creatures of myth that walked among them, acting like one of them. He only knew of one way to attract the Volturi. They would be on him like bees to honey and they would have no choice but to kill him. A smile flew across his lips. Then he would be with Bella again.
He began to unbutton his shirt when he heard a soft chuckle come from behind him. He ignored it.
"I never took you to be an exhibitionist, Edward," a low, silky voice spoke.
Edward whirled around and stared back at the familiar lilac eyes looking at him in amusement.
"buon giorno," she replied in smooth Italian, her eyes dancing in amusement. "It has been a long time, no?"
"Alyssa," he breathed. "What are you doing here?"
Alyssa leaned back against a pillar, her eyes now glancing at the humans. "People watching. It has become a new hobby of mine. How else are you supposed to blend in amongst them if you do not know how to act like them?" She looked back at him. "I should be asking the same of you, amico mio. What are you doing here?"
He looked away. Edward knew that if he continued to stare back at her that he would reveal almost anything to her. Alyssa was an old friend of his, a young vampire that Carlisle had saved some years before Edward was even born. She had been turned two decades before and had run into a spot of trouble in her new town. Carlisle arrived in time to save her from being publicly staked. Since then, Alyssa had been by his side for some time. When Edward had been turned, she became close friends with him, helping him accept his new life as a vampire. After Edward had accepted everything, she left, telling the men that she wanted to try to live on her own. He never saw her since.
"Are you hiding something from me?" she asked softly.
"I don't want to talk about it," he said hurriedly.
"Ah, so it's still fresh on your mind." Alyssa looked out at the crowd again. "You haven't changed a bit, you know. You are the same shy boy I have always known."
"Not really," he muttered bitterly.
She raised an eyebrow. "Really?"
He knew what she was thinking. She was wondering why, after all this time, he had come to Rome and what had happened to make him come here. She wondered if it was because of his family.
"They didn't make me come here," he said.
Alyssa blinked and then laughed. Edward always enjoyed her laugh. It wasn't like Bella's but it was still enough to make the corners of his mouth twitch. Her laugh was high and musical.
"I have forgotten that you could read minds, amico mio," she replied, chuckling. "Since I have a feeling that you will be staying awhile, I am sure that I will get used to it again." She then sobered. "Seriously, what happened?"
Alyssa's power was in her eyes. She was a rarity to vampires, having retained her human eye color, and so was her power, to use her eyes to entrance anyone, including vampires and werewolves. She could make anyone spout out their secrets as if they were talking about the weather. Carlisle joked that in her past she must have seen a lot of lies and deceit and that was why she gained this power when she was turned.
He sighed, turning away from her lilac eyes. "I don't want to tell you."
He was surprised when she didn't yell at him, verbally and mentally. Instead, she just smiled. "You will tell me in due time. But for now, let us get out of here and back to my villa."
They moved with human-like speed, not wanting to attract attention. Edward took in the sights with childlike awe, amusing Alyssa to no end.
"This is why I came back here, even after all the memories of my past," she said. "I have always loved Rome. I loved the sights, the smells, and I even loved the schooling here."
"You didn't go to school," he argued.
She smiled. "I did, actually. All females went to school to learn how to maintain a home. We didn't learn what you men did, but we learned all the same." Then her smile vanished. "I remember being married young. My parents wanted me out of the house and into another quickly. All my friends were married by then as well. Did Carlisle ever tell you that I was married for a few years before I was turned?" Edward shook his head. "Hmm. I'll have to tell you that someday."
He wondered why until he recognized the villa he used to come to when he was in Rome. It was still like he remembered. Rich creamy walls enclosed the living space and a single doorway led into the antechamber.
"I kept it the same," Alyssa remarked as Edward took in the room. "My father loved the ideas of ancient Rome, so he kept the house the same as they did back then." She smiled down at her reflection in the small pool in the antechamber. "Come. Let me show you to your room."
