Dragon Rider, a Kingdom Hearts fanfic
written by Mistress Wisewings
Summary: For centuries, magical creatures have co-exited alongside mankind, some races even becoming friendly with each other. But Lord Xemnas has grown exasperated and has started a war. In the city of Twilight Town, potential Dragon Riders have come for their training. Will the new potential Riders be trained in time before the war reaches Twilight Town?
Notes: Roxas will be female in this story, just so you know. And here are the Rider/Dragon pairings (most of them will become couples, since Dragons can shapeshift into a human form once they form a bond with their Rider): Axel/Roxas, Demyx/Zexion, Xaldin/Lexaeus, Marluxia/Vexen, Xigbar/Luxord, Larxene/Saix. The only one that will not become a couple is the last one, obviously. I can only see Larxene with Marluxia and he's with Vexen this time. Maybe the Dragon can finally tame the normally icy man. ^^ So.... here we go!
Chapter One: Bond
"Why do we have to go find them rather than them finding us?" Vexen grumbled, hacking away at yet another tree branch that hung in front of his face.
"They say it's to test us," Xigbar replied, hitching his backpack further up his shoulder. "As if. They just want to see if we survive the trip, see who the weakest link is." He turned around and gave Demyx a wink.
"Watch it, one-eye," the blonde Mohawk-mullet-haired teen grumbled. "I'm not as hopeless as you think."
"I wouldn't be too sure about that, kid."
Axel and Xaldin hid their smirks behind their hands. Larxene, the only girl of the group, scoffed and continued to walk in silence. Xigbar continued to tease Demyx and Vexen continued to rant.
The group of young adults were known as potential Dragon Riders, a human who was capable of bonding and riding a Dragon. Compared to the other magical creatures of Kingdom Hearts, Dragons were the most tempermental of the animal kingdom. Once bonded to their Rider (who is determined when both Dragon and Rider are born), they can assume a human form to travel with their Rider and they also share a telepathic link between the two.
The six were currently headed toward Dragon Land, where all the Dragons lived. The clothes the humans wore consisted of shorts and tanktops, since Dragon Land was very hot.
"We must be close," Vexen responded after a few moments of silence. "I can feel the heat already."
"Will it melt your icy attitude?" Xigbar teased. He ducked when the long-haired blonde swung at him. "Hey, watch it. I don't need to lose the other eye, ya know?"
"I bet they don't last long before they really fight," Xaldin remarked to Axel, the dreadlocked man grinning widely.
The redhead grinned back. "You're on, Xal."
-------------------------
Finally, before the sun started to sink into the horizon, the group reached Dragon Land. A ten foot tall steel wall seperated the two lands, with a few guards standing by the wall.
"Identify yourselves," one male barked, shifting his spear.
The six potentials flashed their ID cards and the two males let them pass through the gates without another word. Demyx let out a sigh as they passed through.
"They were scary."
Larxene scoffed again. "Kid, the Dragons are much more scarier than those guards."
Demyx's hair seemed to droop. "I know."
"Leave the kid alone, Larx," Axel said, throwing an arm around the younger kid's shoulders.
The group fell silent as they made their way through the rough terrain toward the main town called Dragon's Lair. They passed several lone Dragons and were surprised to see a few of the beasts eating from several leafy trees.
"So, do we have to go through Dragon Land to find our Dragons?" Larxene asked, sounding disgusted.
"No," Vexen responded. "We have to talk to the Dragon Master and he will summon our Dragons. It's up to us to form the bond, though." He eyed the girl. "You should have packed something better than those boots you wear."
"Don't tell me how to dress, Vexy," she snarled.
Xaldin and Axel stepped in between the two blondes, breaking up their fight. Xigbar let out a sigh and Demyx remained silent, staring down at the reddish ground beneath his feet.
------------------------
I sense something.
Roxas lifted her head and stared at the silver Dragon in front of her. Oh? What do you sense, Zexion?
Change is coming, Zexion responded, his blue eyes staring off into the distance. Do you not feel it, Roxas?
The female Dragon bobbed her reptilian head. Of course I do, Brother. I wonder if this is how Sora felt before he left to join with his Rider.
The Dragons knew of the arrival of the new potential Riders before they stepped foot in their land. It is said that the Dragon can feel their Rider when the human got closer to the main town.
More than likely. The adolescent Dragon folded his slender body so he sank down to the ground next to his sister. Where is Luxord?
The smaller silver Dragon snorted. Who knows where that one has gone. I vaguely heard him saying something about bets.
Roxas, Zexion, and Luxord were sibling Dragons, born from the same nesting mother, just like their other siblings Cloud and Sora. Cloud and Sora were joined with their Riders and occasionally came back to check on the three. But for the past few months, they never heard back from their brothers. Roxas and Zexion sank into their studies while Luxord vanished to bet with the other Dragons.
Zexion watched with a smile as Roxas let out a wide yawn. When she was but a hatchling, she would constantly try to stay awake to be with her brothers. That never seemed to fade as she grew up.
You can take a nap, sister. I will notify you when He comes.
He could see the stubborness in her blue eyes but he knew she was not going to resist. Finally, Roxas nodded. She curled her long tufted tail around her body and rested her head on top of her tail, closing her beautiful eyes. Zexion nuzzled her affectionally before resuming his gaze over the area. He could feel the draw of his Rider coming closer and closer. Soon, he whispered.
---------------------
"We have kept them together ever since we heard from Leon," Cid grumbled as he talked with the potentials. He used his tongue to shift his toothpick to the other side of his mouth. "They are not far."
"What kind are they?" Xigbar asked.
"A mixed variety. We have three Firebreathers and siblings nonetheless, one Earthshaker, one Luna, and one Plantweaver," the old man replied, ticking them off on his fingers. "All of them are rather young as well, but well-trained. You shouldn't have much trouble with them, especially the Firebreathers."
"Thank Heavens," Vexen whispered. "Can you take us to them?"
"Sure." The man stalked off and the group jogged to keep up with him.
He was right; they weren't that far from the village. They felt something tug within them. Their teachers told them that what they would feel would be the bond of the Rider and Dragon.
"Are there no other potential Dragons here?" Axel asked as they passed empty fenced areas.
"Not that we know of," Cid said. "A damn shame, considering the war that's on the horizon."
He finally stopped in front of an enclosure and he opened the gate. "Go in, fellas and lady. Shout when you are ready to leave."
The six humans entered, their eyes on the heavily forested area in front of them. They were close, they could feel it. They lowered their backpacks onto the ground and continued, only taking their bonding daggers with.
"I almost can't stand this pressure in my chest," Vexen whined. "It's unbearable."
"It'll go away soon enough Vex," Xaldin responded, rubbing his own chest.
Demyx let out a shriek from behind them and the five whirled around, daggers drawn. They relaxed when they noticed a dark pink Dragon staring at the young boy, sniffing him.
You are not my Rider, the pink Dragon said out loud. His blue eyes flicked toward the others.
"Hello, sir Dragon," Vexen said in a formal tone. He shivered when the blue eyes turned to him, the pressure in his chest mounting.
Yesss... he hissed, walking toward the older male. The others stepped away, almost feeling the sparks flying. You are my Rider. What is your name, human?
"Vexen," the man whispered. He found he couldn't control himself while those eyes were staring at him. He lifted his dagger and slashed at his right wrist, wincing at the pain. "Will you accept our bond, under the light of the Mother Moon and Father Sky?"
The Dragon let out a purr. Yes, Vexen. I pledge under the Father Sky and Mother Moon to be your Dragon until death takes one of us away. He took a claw and slashed at his chest. Dark blood beaded from underneath the pink scales. Together, the Dragon and Rider moved forward until Vexen's bleeding wrist came in contact with the Dragon's chest wound. Bright light enveloped the two and the five humans shielded their eyes.
Once the light vanished, they turned toward the bonded pair. The Dragon remained the same but Vexen had changed. He was now covered in armor, electric blue steel combining with silver chainlinks. His helmet was dragon-shaped, with a full facial shield.
"Very stylish, Vexen," Axel commented.
"Thanks," the man said stiffly. He closed his eyes and the armor vanished. "Marluxia, please transform, if you don't mind."
As the pink Dragon bowed his head, a green light surrounded the large male. The light shrinked until it became about as tall as Axel, who was the tallest of the group. The light vanished, revealing a muscular man with the same pink color hair as his scales. He wore the customary Dragon outfit their human forms wore: long leather pants, loose white long-sleeved shirt, and soft leather boots.
Marluxia smiled at the group. "My name is Marluxia. It is a pleasure to meet you and to have this opportunity to fight alongside you."
The group made their introductions as they moved forward. Marluxia chatted freely with them, revealing himself as the Plantweaver Cid mentioned. He seemed like a curious fellow as he questioned the humans.
Once again, their chatter was broken by Demyx's yelp of surprise. This time, he had stumbled upon two beautiful silver Dragons. One of them was smaller and appeared to be deep in sleep, the other one curled close and watching over it. The bigger silver Dragon turned to them, icy blue eyes scanning them.
I see you have bonded with your Rider, Marly, he spoke.
Marluxia inclined his head. "I have, Zexion." He turned toward the smaller Dragon. "Roxas asleep again?"
Zexion let out a sound that sounded like a chuckle. You know how she is. She would always attempt to stay up with the big boys. He nuzzled the female. Time to wake up, Roxy. They are here.
Axel felt his heart beat loudly as the female opened her eyes. She seemed to stare at him and the pressure built in his chest. Without knowing what he was doing, he approached her, with Demyx approaching the other silver Dragon. They repeated what Vexen had done, slitting their wrists and asking for the Dragons to accept their bond. Zexion and Roxas accepted and the same bright light appeared, consuming the four.
Axel's armor was very different from Vexen's. Where the older blonde's was a blue color, the redhead's was a bright red, with black chainmill links. Demyx's armor was lighter and shone a beautiful dark blue. The two Riders vanished their armor as their Dragons shifted before them. Zexion was dressed as Marluxia was, and his hair was caught between blue and silver, half of his face concealed by long bangs. Roxas wore a dark cotton skirt that went to her ankles and had the same long-sleeved shirt that her fellow Dragons wore. Her hair was the same color as Larxene's, but Roxas had short spiky hair that stuck up in all directions.
Zexion chuckled as he ruffled her hair. "Just like your tail."
Roxas scowled. "Do that one more time, Zexy. I dare you."
Marluxia grinned and wrapped an arm around the blonde. "It suits you, my dear. You look just like Sora, only he's a brunette."
"True." A smile lit up her face and Axel gulped, silently in awe of how beautiful she was.
"Three more to go," Xigbar chirped. "Let's go before the sun is completely gone."
As they traveled, they learned more about the two sibling Dragons, of how they had two other brothers that were paired off and how they had one more that was prancing around somewhere.
"Lux and his gambling," Marluxia said, shaking his head. "I hope his Rider will cure him of that habit."
"Good luck," Zexion replied from beside Demyx. He was still in awe of his Rider's hair, something Roxas found hilarious. She giggled as she walked alongside Axel. Zexion, however, found it equally hilarious of how much shorther Roxas was compared to Axel. She barely reached his shoulder, even with her hair.
---------------------
The sun had set and the rest of the group finally found their Dragons. Xigbar was bonded with Zexion and Roxas' brother Luxord, Larxene bonded with the Luna Dragon named Saix, and Xaldin bonded with the Earthshaker Dragon named Lexaeus, or Lex for short. The six Dragons shifted and flew their Riders back to Twilight Town after checking in with Cid. Once they reached the town, the Dragons shifted into their human forms.
"It is strange, being in this tiny form," Lex grumbled. "And clothed." He plucked at his white shirt.
"You'll get used to it, Lex," Axel commented as they entered the training building. The Dragons eyed the interior of the place, feeling clastrophobic. Their Riders picked up on their emotional spike.
Leon, who was leaning against the main desk, grinned at the looks on their faces. "Once the Dragons are used to buildings, the feeling will fade." He turned to Zexion, Luxord, and Roxas, his grin widening. "It is good to see you three again, this time as humans."
"Are our brothers here too?" Luxord asked, his voice cheerful despite his sense of enclosure.
"You will meet them later. For now, we have to get you your rooms. Follow me."
Roxas and Zexion literally clung on to their Riders as the ceiling got lower and lower as they left the high-ceilinged room. The other four Dragons weren't so touchy, but remained close to their Riders.
"I miss the sky," Roxas whimpered into Axel's side. She mentally purred at her Rider's heat enveloping her.
"You'll learn to love it here," the redhead said, rubbing her side.
"The rooms are split into having the Riders and their Dragons in the same room," Leon said, pointing to the six doors in front of him. "For the time being, your rooms will have two beds. When your bond grows deeper and depending on your relationship, there will only be one bed per room. In your room is a map of the facilities and I expect you to take it with you once tomorrow comes. For now, I will let you get acquainted with your rooms and let you sleep. Have a good night." The dark-haired Rider left the corridor.
For a moment, no one moved. The Dragons slowly got accustomed to the ceiling but Zexion and Roxas still clung on, enjoying the feeling of their Riders nearby. The rest snickered at the looks on Axel and Demyx's faces.
"We should hit the sack," Xigbar said, yawning loudly.
Luxord turned to his Rider, confused. "Hit the sack? What on Earth is that?"
The older man grinned and pulled his Dragon toward one of the doors. "Man do you have a lot to learn, Lux."
"I can tell already who will top in that relationship," Axel said, snickering. "Let's go, Roxie. You look ready to drop."
"I feel like it," she mumbled, leaning into his side.
Zexion unwrapped himself from his Rider and pulled his sister into a hug, kissing the top of her head. "Sleep well," he said.
"You too," Roxas replied, kissing his cheek. The two never saw the looks of jealousy on their Rider's faces.
"Those two better cut it with their affectionate natures toward each other," Marluxia said after watching the two pairs close their doors. "Axel and Demy will turn into cavemen if possible." He dragged Vexen off to a room and the other two followed their lead.
Tomorrow would start their training together.
