Title: Tricking Sir Roland
Author: Mistress Fangs
Rating: PG-13
Summary: I fail at summaries so not even going to try
Winter sighed and blew a piece of hair from her face. This hadn’t gone well at all… All she had to do was sneak in, grab the purse full of coin off of one of the Sheriff’s men and get out, her first mission on her own. She had come so close to pulling it off of Burke… She had gotten side tracked. She had heard him and the Sheriff discussing the upcoming coronation. She had decided to wait and listen; wanting to bring what information she could back to Robin and the others. That’s when she had gotten made; DeVille’s man servant was quieter than he had let on.
Now here she sat in one of the rooms of the Inn her hands bound in front of her, her bow, quiver and the dagger she had brought with sitting on the table by the door. One of the Sheriff’s men sitting at the door, his sword in his lap, his head bowed slightly.
Her fair fortune sadly hadn’t smiled completely on her; she hadn’t gotten Blackstone as her guard. But on bright glimmer of hope was that it was the new one, if she had heard it right his name’s Roland, he must’ve been the newest blood in the group.
She had managed to sit on the bed in the right spot where she could get a good look at the room. If… no when she would get out of here, the window was going to be her best bet. The door was just a bad idea.
“Begging your pardon, Roland was it?” she asked tentatively.
His head snapped up from his chest hearing his name, “It’s Lord Roland”
“Fair enough and I beg your pardon,” she said nodding her head slightly to him, “but do you know why I’m being held?”
“For spying on the Lord High Sheriff”
“But as I told the quiet one, I was looking for my purse; I had lost it the night before.”
“Oh… If that’s… no, no burke said to hold you here till it was time to leave.”
She sighed again, this time in relief. Sadly the lie hadn’t worked but as a plus she hadn’t been found out as one of the Merry Men. At least it was one advantage to wearing red, also didn’t hurt that she hadn’t gotten her hat yet.
She reached up to rub her temples, trying to figure out a way out of this mess. As she lifted her hands she noticed something about the knot as she pulled her hands slightly apart from one another the loops around her wrists became loose… She realized that if someone were to hold onto the end of the rope the loops would stay taught.
Oh Roland, you dear, sweet fool… This just became a lot easier.
“How long have you been a part of the Sheriff’s men?”
“1 month” he said, Winter stifled a laugh as he puffed out his chest in pride.
“You must be quite brave to join their ranks.”
“I am indeed”
“And to go after Robin and his men, I don’t think I could do it”
“I’m not afraid”
She kept him talking; as she did she slowly continued loosening her bonds. She hated playing the role of the helpless damsel but the occasion called for it.
“Then you are braver than most, why I won’t set foot in Sherwood Forest for fear of those…. Ruffians.”
She could just imagine the cackling that would be coming from the others if they could hear her now… Much would never let it down.
“Never fear Miss… Say what is your name? The others never informed me of it.”
“Scarlet” she admitted, knowing it would take him a moment to connect her name to Will’s, if he would at all, “Say Lord Roland, would you mind horribly loosening the rope just a bit? I can’t feel my hands anymore”
Roland looked towards the door then back at Winter who held her hands out to him, a slightly pained look on her face.
“I suppose just a little” he said getting up from the chair and kneeling down in front of her.
When his hands neared hers she grabbed them, pulling them through the now loosened loops, replacing her own hands with his. She grabbed the end of the rope, placing her boot on his chest, when she pushed him backwards the bonds tightened once more.
“Wait! What?” he asked confused as she tied the end of the rope tightly to the bed post.
“No offence, but Robin and the others, my brother more importantly, would be upset if on my first solo mission I got caught.” She explained as she placed her quiver once more on her back, took her bow in hand and sheathed her dagger, “Speaking of…”
“What! What are you doing?” Roland asked slightly panicked feeling her hands on his belt.
“Liberating you of your purse.” She said placing it into her own, and heading for the window.
“Wait, you said Robin...”
“Very astute of you.” She said opening the window.
“You’re with Robin Hood!”
“No… Never caught his eye that way, more part of the band”
“But you’re a woman!”
“Yes, you’re not the first one to point that out,” She said swinging her leg over the window sill. She turned back to him drawing an arrow as she went, aiming for his forehead as he struggled against his bonds, “Now be a good lord and stay put a bit longer while I get away.”
“You’ll be sorry” he said a bit unconvincingly, “we will catch you Miss Scarlet”
She rolled her eyes and released the arrow, grinning as it pinned his hat to the bed post, “Cheers Roland, will see you again.” She said leaving out the window and bolted for the forest.
“Are you sure about this Much?” Robin asked him.
Winter slowed hearing the familiar voices of ‘her’ boys, she had gotten back to the meeting spot a few hours after leaving the Inn, getting back had been the easy part of all of this.
“Very sure Robin, she was taken to one of the upper rooms.” Much said nodding pointing to something on the rock.
“Well from you said there is only of them guarding her, so this should be simple.”
“Never should’ve let her go on her own.” She could hear her brother add.
“You boys talking about me?” she asked entering the small clearing a smile on her face.
“Winter! You’re alright!” Will said pulling her into a hug.
“Yes big brother just fine,” she said, “now let me go… I can’t breathe.”
She smiled at him as he let go and joined the rest of them.
“So your brother was right, you aren’t ready…” before Robin finished his sentence she tossed the purse to him.
“I also have information from DeVille’s lips, not sure which of it is pertinent, but it’s yours if you want it” she said the smile on her face growing slightly larger.
“That’s our girl”
