“Come on Draco, you have to come.” Pansy pleaded with him on Halloween after classes.
“I don’t see the point of going to a stupid Halloween dance.” He said content on staying in the common room. Pansy and the others had been pestering him since they found out about the party. Before giving up Pansy had one last brain storm.
“Come on Draco, there’s a costume contest, and I know you don’t want a Gryffindor to win.” She said.
“Fine but only so they don’t win,” He said and headed up the boys dorm.
His mother had bought him a costume a while back and sent it to him. He pulled it out the box containing it from the bottom of his trunk. His mother had bought it in Paris when she went on shopping trip with some of her friends. It was a costume fit for a prince. It was a rich black fabric with sequence and more things trimming it. The mask that went along with it was a perfect fit for him. It was a masquerade and if he headed down either before or after the rest of the Slytherins he could avoid them the entire night. He smiled smugly to himself, he would do it. No one had seen the costume so he could just go and pretend to be someone he wasn’t. It would be interesting to see if anyone would be able to recognize him. He smiled to himself as he got changed.
On the other side of Hogwarts,
“Come on Alie. You have to come; Harry, Ron and I are going.” Hermione said as Alie helped her friend into her costume.
“Hermione I’m going to get attacked by guys wanting to dance with me if I do.” She said as she finished lacing up Hermione’s bodice and pulling it tight, so that it would stay up but so that she could still breathe.
“Then pretend that Ron is your date, that way the two of you won’t feel like Harry and I are using you as security blankets,” she said , “Not that there is anything wrong with that.”
“I don’t know I mean… It’d be weird going with Ron. He’s my best friend, and don’t really have any feelings like that for him.” She said helping Hermione with her mask and fixing her hair around it.
“And you think Harry and I going isn't?”
“Well the two of you figured out your feelings for one another. Ron and I are still trying to figure that out.”
“Alright I’ll stop arguing with you. But just don’t stay up here bored. I mean you have a beautiful costume.”
“I know, I might come down for awhile I’m still not sure yet. By the way Hermione you look gorgeous.” She said to her friend with a smile.
“Thanks, I just hope your brother does too.” She said hugging Alie before heading downstairs.
Alie sighed and pulled the costume from the box. It had belonged to her mother. It was a beautiful white gown that made her feel like Cinderella every time she wore it. She then smiled to herself at the idea of surprising her brother, Hermione and Ron. She then put her stubbornness aside and got ready for the dance.
“Wow this place looks amazing.” Hermione said as she, Harry and Ron entered the Great Hall; it was set up like a ballroom with little Hogwarts touches here and there. The teachers table was pushed back further and there was a stage set up with instruments placed on it.
“This is going to be great,” Harry said in agreement, he still was aghast at the way Hermione looked in her Guinevere costume.
“To bad that Alie is going to have to miss it.” Ron said wishing the girl of his dreams was with them.
“She said she might come down later.” Hermione said as the 3 of them grabbed a table near the dance floor, “Wait till you see her in her costume, she looks breath taking.”
“And so do you my lady.” Harry said taking his seat next to her, causing Ron to roll his eyes.
“Why thank you my lord,” she said and lightly kissed Harry’s cheek.
Ron just rolled his eyes and looked out over the dance floor, he hoped that he would see Alie tonight, he had figured out his feelings and wanted to tell her before it was too late.
Draco smiled to him self from his spot in the room, he had gotten down early and no one had recognized him yet. He had chosen a spot off to the side of the room. He was leaning against the wall watching as things went on, he was impressed with Potter and Grangers costumes, and they were authentic of Arthur and Guinevere, the mud blood had probably found pictures in a book. But there was one person in costume that had arrived later that had sparked his interest in particular. She had entered alone, but had merged in with a crowd. He had never seen her around before, or may be he had and just didn’t know it.
‘Mental note find out who she is…’ he thought to himself.
She had on a white gown that made her look like a princess, the wings from her back weren’t covered in feather but more gossamer, when she turned he saw that the were transfigured on to her back, making it apparent that she was a seventh year, her mask covered around her eyes only, and looked like a white version of his, her hair was in soft curls that accented her face perfectly and her make up was subtle yet noticeable.
Alie smiled to her self as she walked around the hall looking at what was there; she was getting looks from many different people. One in particular sparked her interest the most. He was standing off to the side not really with anyone there. She then concentrated on what was around her; Trelawney had set up a fortune tellers booth off in the corner, carnival games and rides were set up out side and a hedge maze as well. She rubbed her bare arms looking at the maze, it reminded her of the love she had lost in her fourth year, there were two mazes next to each other, one was to go through on your own or with a group, the other was a love maze both were attracting a lot of attention.
“May I have this dance?” a voice asked from behind her. She turned and saw that it was the guy that had caught her attention; his voice was familiar to her.
“Of course,” She said she bowed as they had learned and took his hand, he placed his arm around her waist as her other hand held her dress up as not to step on it. The two of them began the waltz they had learned earlier in the week.
Around them people had stopped and were watching the two of them dance. Every one of them was unaware of who they were and they were also. He locked his steal eyes with her emerald green and stared into them. He knew those eyes, he didn’t know who they belonged to but he knew them.
“What house are you from, my lord?” she asked in a familiar voice.
“Slytherin, my lady and you?” he asked then saw the hesitation in her eyes, she bit her lip and turned her head to the side, it was obvious she was from another house, “you can tell me you know, tonight I am of free mind and I will not judge by where you are from,”
“Alright… I am from… from Gryffindor.” She said hesitating.
“Oh,” he said, he wasn’t supposed to fraternize with her but tonight he could careless, “Well for tonight I am too.”
She smiled at him and leaned her head against his chest. She felt like nothing could go wrong, she could’ve cared less that he was in Slytherin.
“I’ll be right back,” she said letting go of him, she headed off to the restroom.
As she walked she could see everyone around them, she saw the seventh year Slytherins and happened to notice that someone in particular was missing from there herd. As she walked into the restroom she then realized who it was that her mystery man truly was, why his hair, voice and eyes were so familiar, he was Draco Malfoy the sworn enemy of her and her brother since they became Gryffindors their first year. She held back the tears and looked into the mirror, why was she so sad that he was Malfoy? She shouldn’t care she should be able to go back to him and hit him. She then took in a deep breath and headed back out; she went up to him and led him outside.
“We need to talk.” She said, “There is something you need to know,”
She then looked around her at the gathering crowd and bit her lip again, he noticed that she wanted to talk alone, he took her hand lead her into the couples hedge maze, after about 5 minutes of walking around they found a secluded spot.
“What is it?” he asked sitting with her on a bench.
“I… I…” she started but couldn’t finish looking away from him to hide the tears in her eyes.
“What? What’s wrong?” he asked turning her head to look at him wiping the fallen tears away with his thumbs
“I know who you are…” she said softly not letting her eyes meet his, hoping like hell she was wrong.
“So? What’s wrong with that? I mean I know we’re from rival houses but…” he said taking off his mask, she then interrupted him.
“Draco, you don’t get it, think of whom I remind you of then you’ll see what’s wrong,” she said trying not to cry harder.
He brushed the dark brown hair away from her features with one hand the other holding her chin, his thumb brushing away her tears and her emerald eyes as he locked them with his. He then realized that there were only two people at Hogwarts that had the eyes he had been gazing into all night.
“No… No you’re not…” he said standing up and moving away from her.
She nodded slowly as she carefully pulled off her mask to reveal the face of his enemy, the scar from behind the mask.
“Yes Dra… Malfoy, I am, I’m Allison Potter, your rival since first year.” She said standing, using his last name as a defense mechanism
“But how, Why?” he asked, it hurt that she had said Malfoy.
“Trust me I’ve been asking myself the same things for the past 5 minutes. I don’t know how it happened.”
“We… we have to pretend this never happened.” He said, but even as he said the words he didn’t want to believe them, his back now to her.
“I know but the entire school saw us dance, what will we say?” she said the tears still poring down her cheeks as she stared at his back, not wanting to believe what she had just heard.
“We planned it.” He said turning to her.
“No one will believe it.” She said not wanting to look at him right now, turning her head from him.
“We can convince them.” He said going over to her and turning her to face him.
“Alright, we have to leave this maze and go back to our respective parties, if they ask who it was we were dancing with we say that they’ll find out later.” She said, she turned her head again as so not to show the tears in her eyes.
“And if neither of us are called up onto the stage then we don’t have to tell who the other was.” He agreed, his heart aching for her to look at him.
She pulled away from him not wanting to be near him, or look at him. He pulled her back holding both her hands in his, looking into her eyes. He looked as though he wanted to say something or do something but he didn’t. She looked at him hoping he would do or say something. Before leaving she placed a hand on one of his cheeks and kissed the other, before pulling away completely she whispered in his ear, “I’ll never forget.” With that she ran out of the maze placing her mask back on.
“I’m telling you guys, the girl in the white dress was Alie.” Hermione said as she, Harry and Ron sat down from playing the carnival games.
“Come on Hermione, if it had been her, she would’ve come over here to talk to us.” Ron said as they watched the couples dance by.
“Plus there’s no way that could’ve been her.” Harry said taking a sip of his drink.
“And why not?” a familiar voice asked from behind them.
They turned and saw the girl in the white dress behind them.
“Alie," Ron asked in awe at her costume.
“Yup, that’s me.” She said with a smile, taking the seat next to Ron.
“Why didn’t you come over earlier and who was that you were dancing with?” Harry asked.
“I wanted to walk around as a regular student for a while and he was a… friend.” She said needing to figure some thing to say.
“Yeah but who was he?”
“Hello guys.” Draco said approaching the other Slytherins.
“Malfoy, was wondering if you were going to show or not.” Blaise Zambini said shaking his hand as he sat down between Crabbe and Goyle.
“Of course, had to keep you all guessing before I told you it was me,” He said.
“So who was that girl that you were dancing with?” Pansy asked a hint of jealousy in her voice.
“Just someone.” He said, “Quiet, they’re announcing the winners of the costume contest.”
“Alright students, let me thank you for taking such great enthusiasm in this contest and that it was extremely hard for us to pick the winners but after much deliberation we have chosen…” Dumbledore said then paused for dramatic effect, “Allison Potter and Draco Malfoy.”
“I don’t see the point of going to a stupid Halloween dance.” He said content on staying in the common room. Pansy and the others had been pestering him since they found out about the party. Before giving up Pansy had one last brain storm.
