This is a repost of the Greatest Mistake fanfic... just needed to add what kind of fanfiction it was ^^
Greatest Mistake written by Mistress Wisewings
Summary: Based off of Grey's Anatomy. In season two, Derek Shepherd chose his wife, Addison, over his girlfriend, Meredith Grey. When he finds his wife cheating again, he goes to Meredith, who is still not over him and is ignoring him. How far will Derek go to prove to Meredith that he made a mistake in choosing Addison over her?
Chapter One
"Pick me, choose me, love me."
Derek stared at Meredith, who stared back at him. There were tears in her eyes but they never were released, as if she had an iron grip on them. He sighed and left the room. He needed to be alone so he could make the decision.
Meredith watched him go, silently begging any god that was listening that he would choose her over his wife. She hoped that he would go to her, lift her into his arms, and declare his love for her. Smiling, she left to change out of her scrubs. She needed to head down to Joe's to wait for when Derek would come. ~*~*~*~ Cristina Yang, Alex Karev, George O'Malley, and Izzie Stevens joined Meredith at Joe's. Each of them had decided to make a bet, in secret, about who Derek would choose. They knew that if Meredith knew about the bet that she would be upset at them.
Meredith glanced at the door leading outside the bar and sighed. "He's not coming."
"Yes, he will come," said Izzie. "He's totally in love with you and will pick you over Addison."
"Besides," replied George, "you are much better looking."
"No she's not," Alex whispered, taking a drink from his beer. He winced when Izzie smacked the back of his head.
"Be supportive," she hissed.
"God, this is boring," Cristina said, yawning. "I mean, I could be with Burke right now."
Meredith's eyes glanced at the door again when she heard the bells. Her face dropped when she saw a giggling band of girls enter.
"Derek'll come, Meredith," replied Joe the bartender, smiling. "It's obvious that he is in love with you."
"Thanks," she said, smiling weakly. ~*~*~*~ Derek sat in the main entrance of the hospital, his jacket hung over his leg. His mind was reeling, still not able to choose between the two women. On one hand, he would rather be with his wife; they were married and should be together forever, right? On the other hand, he loved Meredith very much and couldn't handle hurting her like this. He sighed and pulled his hands through his hair.
"Hello."
He looked up and smiled at his wife. "Hey."
"Ready to go home?" she asked, holding out her hand.
Derek stared up into her eyes and knew he made his decision. I'm sorry, Meredith, he thought, taking Addison's hand.
"Yes, let's go home." ~*~*~*~ Meredith was nearly drunk when her friends decided that enough was enough and drove her home. All four of them wanted to kill Derek Shepherd the next time they saw him, or even Addison. He used Meredith to try to get over his broken marriage and when Addison came to Seattle, he dropped Meredith like she was nothing and went to his wife.
Alex picked her up from the backseat and carried her inside while the others trailed after him. They had all decided to stay the night so they could comfort Meredith in the morning when she woke up. ~*~*~*

Chapter Two
Meredith rushed into the dressing room and went to her locker. Her eyes looked dull and there were dark circles under her eyes. Both George and Izzie looked like hell too, but not as much as she was.
"Rough night?" Alex asked softly, his eyes flicking over Meredith's thin form.
"She did manage to fall asleep after a while," Izzie said in a tired voice, "but when she woke up she wasn't her normal self."
"This is dark and twisty Meredith," Meredith mumbled under her breath.
"You are always dark and twisty Meredith," Cristina said, munching on a bag of chips. "You are more interesting that way too."
Everyone but Meredith glared at her but she ignored them. Bailey came through and handed out assignments. When she glimpsed at Meredith, she immediately put her at filling out paperwork. It was obvious who Derek Shepherd had chosen and although Bailey was happy that it was someone around her age, it still hurt to see her intern look so miserable. ~*~*~*~ Derek and Addison entered the hospital together, their hands clasped together. Cristina, who was at the front desk chatting with Meredith, glared at the man and turned her back to him.
"Anyway, page me if you need anything," she whispered and then left.
The happy couple watched her go and then they looked at Meredith, whose head was down, her pen scribbling furiously.
"Hello Meredith," Addison said happily.
"Hey," Meredith replied, not wanting anything to do with the Shepherds.
Addison tugged Derek along with her, but his eyes were glued at Meredith's hunched form. He swore she looked like hell. ~*~*~*~ Meredith happily sipped the drink Alex had given her, happy to have something to do other than write up forms. Alex watched her, worry shining in his eyes. He wanted to have a few minutes alone with Dr. Shepherd, to tell him that he chose the wrong woman.
"Thanks for that, Alex," she replied, smiling.
"No problem." He smiled back at her and took the cup. "I'll be back later." ~*~*~*~ "Meredith."
She didn't want to look up at him, knowing who it was. All she wanted to do was erase the memory of him from her mind. I wonder if I could ask someone to help me get a surgery where they took my memory out... "Meredith..."
Sighing, Meredith finally glanced up into Derek's deep blue eyes. She could already feel herself falling all over him again.
He frowned. "You look terrible. Are you sick?"
"I don't think so," she mumbled, looking down. She so wanted to swipe at the hand on her forehead, to exclaim that she was fine when she wasn't.
"No fever," he said. He looked at her again. "Are you sure you are fine?"
"Yes, Dr. Shepherd," she said coldly, reverting to his professional name. "I am fine."
Derek's frown deepened. "If you say so," he said and he walked away, worried about Meredith. ~*~*~*~

Chapter Three
Weeks passed by and Meredith still hadn't gotten over Derek. The other interns tried to get her to notice other men but it was no use. Not even the new hot plastic surgeon, Mark Sloan, would do.
"He must've been special," Mark had remarked one day. He saw her confused look. "The guy who left you. He must've been one hell of a guy to leave you still pining for him."
"Yeah," Meredith replied absently, sipping at her drink. "That he was."
Mark had taken her out to Joe's for a drink and to see if she was interested, which she wasn't. It was then that he recognized her name. When he had first heard it, Mark thought he had heard it before, but now...
"It was Derek, huh?" he asked.
"What?"
"Derek Shepherd. That is your ex." He smiled at her look. "I used to be friends with him, up until I slept with his wife. And it wasn't that big of a deal, anyway. Addison was lonely and her marriage was slowly going to hell, as Derek was hardly there, so she turned to me and I couldn't deny her."
Meredith took another sip and looked at Mark again. He was handsome and used to be a friend of Derek. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to try... no.... Meredith couldn't do that.
"Still not interested, eh?" Mark said.
"Sorry," she mumbled.
He waved a hand. "No big. Personally, I would have thought Derek would have gone with you instead of Addison. I know I would." He took one last gulp of his drink and threw a bill down on the bar. "It was nice meeting you though."
"Same." ~*~*~*~*~ Derek entered Joe's Bar after getting off of work, his eyes looking tired. Joe looked up and immediately began to whip up the neurosurgeon's favorite drink.
"What happened?" the bartender asked.
"Addison slept with Mark again," Derek mumbled, downing his drink in one gulp. "God, I was such an idiot."
Joe made a noise of agreement before filling the glass again. "You should have known better, man. If I were you, I would have stuck with Meredith instead of Addison. Poor girl has been down here so many times since you broke up with her. Her friends have tried to set her up with dates but no one catches her eye. Derek, she only has eyes for you; she is completely and totally in love with you. I don't understand how you didn't notice that. She is that one in a million-type of girls."
Derek duck his head to hide his embarrassed look. He knew he should have chosen Meredith. There had been many nights where he would kick himself for not going to Meredith to tell her personally, but there were also nights where he wanted to choose Meredith over his wife.
"I'll try to make things right again," he muttered.
"You can try," Joe replied, "but it may take awhile. You really broke her." ~*~*~*~

Chapter Four
"Meredith.. wait up."
Meredith pressed a button to keep the elevator doors open as Derek slid in, panting and trying to reorganize his curls. She wished the floor beneath her would open up so she could hide from him - forever.
"Thanks," he panted, sending her a grin.
Damn him and that grin of his, she thought to herself. She merely nodded and turned her gaze toward the ceiling of the elevator.
Derek let out a sigh when he noticed that Meredith was ignoring him. "Meredith, please... you can't keep ignoring me for forever."
"Please stop talking. I don't want to hear any more of your...."
She never finished, as the older man leaned forward and pulled her into a kiss. For just a moment, Meredith let him kiss her, press her against the elevator wall. For a moment, she returned the kiss, pretending that he wasn't taken by a beautiful, gynie doctor....
Meredith pushed him away, trying to catch her breath and her control. She glared at Derek, watching his blue eyes stare at her, burning with desire. "What the hell are you doing? What if Mrs. Shepherd comes in to see us like this?"
"Doesn't matter," Derek said, his voice sexily husky. He stepped forward. "I signed the papers. We're getting a divorce."
She wasn't expecting this. The small intern stared at her boss' boss, searching his face to see if he was telling a lie to placate her. "What prompted this change of heart?" she asked tenatively.
"Addison slept with Mark again," Derek said, blowing out a breath. "I should have figured, but..."
"But you thought you could save your marriage," Meredith finished. "When you marry someone, it should be forever."
He nodded, his gaze locked onto her light green eyes. He let a hand snake out and touch her hair, the soft flowery scent sending his heart soaring higher. He knew he had made a mistake in choosing Addison over Meredith, but he would make it right. He had to.

Well... this is the second to last chapter. I didn't expect this to go on forever anyway. So, here is the chappie
Chapter Five
Finally the divorce papers went through and Derek was now a free man. Unfortunately, the news went around the entire hospital and any single women were making eyes at him, giggling behind his back. Didn't they know that he only had eyes for one woman already?
He could see that Meredith wasn't enjoying the news as much, especially with the women looking at him. Derek knew that he would have to reassure her that he was hers, unless he wanted to lose her. He shuddered at the thought.
"Hey Meredith," he said, smiling at her scrub-clad body leaning against the nurses' station. "Do you think I could borrow you for a surgery I am having this afternoon? I'm operating on a guy who needs to have a brain tumor removed."
Cristina was instantly at his side, begging to be put on the surgical team. However, Derek only had eyes for Meredith, mentally pleading her to accept.
The small surgical intern smiled and nodded and he let out the breath he was holding. The Asian girl next to him deflated and glared at her fellow intern.
"Good, then come with me," Derek said, going behind the desk to grab the patient's chart. He waited until they were close enough to the room but far enough that they wouldn't get caught before pushing her against the wall and kissed her.
Meredith let the kiss last before pulling back.
"Are you serious about the surgery or did you just want to kiss me?" she asked, her voice lower than normal and her breathing slightly elevated.
Derek grinned and kissed her neck. "Both, actually. Truthfully, though, I would want to kiss you in front of everyone else so they could get off my back."
The intern grinned inspite of herself. "Are they annoying you?"
He groaned. "Like you wouldn't believe. They should know that I only have eyes for one person."
Meredith, however, didn't get it. "Really?" she asked, sounding slightly down and she looked at her shoes, biting her lip.
Derek tilted her chin up so their eyes met. "Really." He took in a breath. "Mer, ever since we first met, I was crazy about you. Over the time we were a couple, my feelings for you deepened. I fell in love with you and I made the terrible mistake of choosing my wife over you. I promise you, though, that it won't happen again. Losing you was my greatest mistake." He pulled her into another kiss, this one being more gentle and loving than the passionate, desperate kiss they shared earlier.
It was almost hard for Meredith to believe that his gorgeous neurosurgeon was in love with her. Who would want to date someone so... ordinary and full of complications, someone who complains and whines, and especially someone who has a mother with Alzheimer's. Not to mention the absence of a father figure.
"Stop," Derek breathed against her lips.
"Stop what?"
"Thinking what you are thinking." He pulled away slightly and stared into her eyes. "I don't care if you have issues. We can work through those later. Besides," he dipped his head and kissed her carotid artery in her neck, feeling her pulse jump, "who doesn't have issues these days?"
